Today we learned how to listen for sounds using elkonin boxes!  As we listened to sounds in three letter words, we pushed a token in each box to represent each sound that we heard!

5 Senses Pumpkin Explorations!

Sight:

We explored a rotting pumpkin.  We saw that it grew mold, had black specks, and brown water in the middle!

Smell:
We made pumpkin bread!  It smelled yummy!

but the rotting pumpkin smelled TERRIBLE!

Touch:
Look at all the ingredients we had to use to make our bread.  We mixed, and poured, and measured!

Taste:
The best part of all :)  It was sooooooo yummy, the kids gobbled it up before I could even take a picture!

We also explored if a pumpkin floats or sinks... Look at what happened!

Number Stories

We practiced pumpkin number stories with our thinking buddies.  We also practiced reading The Five Little Pumpkins poem, and talked about how that is also a number story.  It started with five little pumpkins, and ended with zero!

Storytelling

We practiced storytelling this week in both reading and writing.

After reading The Little Old Lady who wasn't Afraid of Anything, we colored our own scarecrows and practiced retelling the story!  Retelling stories are a fundamental part of reading comprehension.

In writing, we practiced telling stories about being scared, adding to them and revising.  We added sound effects and marks to show movement to our stories and drawings!  We are posting our writing samples about how we revise in kindergarten, so be sure to check them out in the hall!

Our star student's mom was a guest reader.  She read The Three Little Pigs to our class, and used props as she read and talked about the story.  We had a great time huffing and puffing like the big bad wolf!

Our trip to Schwallier's Country Basket!

It was a short bus ride to the apple orchard!

Miss D taught us about the different types of apples in the orchard

We got to have a donut and cider snack!  YUM!

Then, we went to the orchard to pick an apple to take home.  We learned we had to lift, twist, and pull the apple off the tree!

Next, we walked over to the pumpkin patch to find a small pumpkin.  Look what we found!

We even got to hold and pet the bunnies!
