Early Reading Strategies

Cross Checking

Cross checking is a reading strategy that all readers must use, in order to comprehend! In the early reading stages, it is very important for a reader to use the picture cues (meaning) along with the visual (phonics) and syntactic (how we talk, language) cues!

During read to self and read to someone, we practiced cross-checking when we were at an unknown word, using
"check the picture" then "get your mouth ready to say the word!" We had many young readers, excited to share their reading strategies!

We are learning what a word is!  We colored spaces orange in our poetry folder, to help us see each word.  As we read, we are practicing pointing under each word as we say them.  This is called One to One print match.  We practice this with familiar text, like the song "Happy Birthday to You!"
