Stranger in the Woods

We read one of our favorite stories, Stranger in the Woods.  We made predictions who the stranger was!  Our class loved the real photographs in the book!

In the story, the snowman has goodies that the forest animals eat!  Bird seed in the red hat, and a carrot for the deer.  We connected to the book by making our own bird feeders!

Enjoy our creations!  You can do this at home, too.  All you need is toilet paper tube, butter-flavored Crisco, and bird seed.  The tube fits nicely over a small tree branch!

Teachers of Writing

Today, we learned that we can all be teachers of writing! We sat side by side with our thinking buddies.  We learned to invite the writer by saying, "Can I hear your writing?"  Then we practiced listening and asking questions.

Martin Luther King, Jr. Day

In Kindergarten, we just cover the basics on this day.  We read a book to help us understand who Martin Luther King Jr. was.

Then, Mrs. S simulated inequality.  Each student was allowed to play with the toys, as long as they complied with the picture rules.  This was tough and Mrs. S was EXTRA picky!

Students started to question and wonder, "it wasn't fair that I couldn't play with my stuffy cause I was wearing jeans..."  There were many sad faces.

After we had a chance to regroup, we talked about how we felt and compared it to the books we read.  We also looked at maps to see how far Mississippi and Alabama were to Michigan!

We watched a small clip of his I Have a Dream speech.

In the end, Mrs. S took down all the inequality signs around the toys and we all peacefully played with our friends!

Happy MLK Day!

Hibernate or Adapt?

We have spent most of January talking about what animals do to survive winter.  After reading non-fiction books on Penguins, we learned that some animals have blubber to keep them warm.  We experimented with our Blubber Gove to find out for ourselves!  First, we predicted...

Then we put on the Blubber Glove and put both hands in the ice water.  Which hand do you think was colder?  Buuuurrrrrrrr!

We also hibernated in our conference room!  As we got cozy in our hibernation cave, we used pictures to help us retell the story The Mitten by Jan Brett.  It was relaxing!

Welcome Back!

We returned this week after a long break...between Christmas vacation and three snow days!

We got right back into our classroom rhythm and 'hum' of learning!  Writing workshop and Daily 5 returned!  We will not have new word wall words, due to our short week.

We also got back into project 64, where we worked hard on our pencil grip, and drawing lots of pictures!  Her is a small sample of what some of us did today!

First pencil was drawn in December.  Smaller pencil in ABC book was drawn today!

We are so proud of our drawings!
