Number Representations and number stories!

Today we worked on creating number representations and number stories! We used manipulatives to find our solution and explained to the class how we found them!

The following are number representations for ten!

Number story: There were four red flowers in a garden. Two more flowers grew. How many flowers are in the garden?

Everyone used their manipulatives to find the correct answer! So we moved to subtraction!

A monkey had ten bananas. He ate four bananas. How many are left?

Ten...

take away four

equals six!

Presidents' Day!

Our weekly reader was about George Washington and Abraham Lincoln. We also read two non-fiction books about them!

George Washington's image is on the quarter and one dollar bill!

Abraham Lincoln's image is on the penny and five dollar bill!

Happy 100th Day and Valentine's Day!!

What a wonderful, happy day!  Today, we celebrated the 100th day of school!  First, we read a book about 100 hiding pigs, then we realized that 100 pigs were hiding in our room.

We looked everywhere! Do you see any?

We used this graph to help us keep track of the numbers we found!

Just a few left to find! I am sure the class will find the rest at free choice.

We then broke off into centers.  We worked in teams to build with 100 cups:

We used Playdoh to make and read numbers:

We used the 1-0-0 to make and label creative drawings

A monster truck

A butterfly

A ghost

And finally, we colored a graphed our results

Enjoy the pictures from our Valentine's Day party! Kim and Jessica and all the parents who joined us were wonderful help. Thank you for all your hard work and taking the time out of your busy schedule to visit the classroom.

A visit from the dentist!

This morning, we got a visit from Dr. Fry, a local dentist!  He taught us about brushing our teeth, getting dental x-rays, and talked about the tools the dentist uses.  We also learned that the best time to brush your teeth is at night-- when you go to sleep, the germs in your mouth go to sleep, too!  We also got some goodies to take home.  Thank you, Dr. Fry!

Kindergarteners predict!

We read our first chapter book-- the true story of Balto!  We talked about what it means to be brave and found the setting (Nome, Alaska) on Google Earth.

Then, we got to this page...

And I stopped! We turned to our neighbors and shared what we thought would happen next.  Were the children saved? Where was the medicine?  What would happen to the sled team?

Have your child share the ending of the book!

Writing leads with partners!

Yesterday we read several books about winter, noticing how they began; The Lead!

Some examples:

In the cold far south...

I am winter...

The snowflakes were resting....

There once lived a penguin...

The days grow short...

Today, we worked with a partner trying to improve the lead in a simple book about Rosie and Bella!

This activity required lots of collaboration, taking turns speaking, listening, writing and drawing!  After we shared, we returned to our own writing to add leads to our pieces!
